The NIE Teachers Investiture Ceremony is held twice yearly in January and August for graduands who have completed their foundation programme at the National Institute of Education (NIE). It is at this ceremony that new teachers receive their teaching diplomas.

March 2004
Sentosa Development Corporation, in collaboration with
MOE, organized a “Balloon Hats Festival” at Sentosa
island. The two-day Festival provided band members
from 27 secondary schools the experience of performing
in a relaxed and leisurely atmosphere. The participating
bands also performed at designated areas around the
island for the public and helped to raise funds for the
Tanglin Special School.

May 2004
“Project Ballpark” was launched with the collaboration
of MOE, schools, parent-volunteer support groups and
the National Sports Associations. The initiative sought
to promote family bonding and a healthy lifestyle
through sports activities. It provided students who
were not selected into school teams an opportunity to
learn to play a sport of their interest. It also allowed
parents to be directly involved in school projects with
their children.

In commemorating the 20th Anniversary of MOE’s Gifted
Education Programme, an inaugural 3-day Gifted
Education Conference was organised. It drew together
more than 1,500 participants from 15 countries, all of
whom were keen to learn ways to further develop the
brightest students under their care. A lego competition
was held during the Conference, where teams used
lego bricks to create their vision of what Singapore
should be.

MOE and the Shell Companies, a major patron of
the Arts in Singapore, jointly organised the “School
Band Fiesta in the Gardens”, which was held at
the Singapore Botanic Gardens. It showcased our
young and talented musicians, and brought music
to many band enthusiasts, music lovers and
families at the Gardens.

Deepening racial harmony among our children is a
long-term endeavour involving schools, parents and
the community. On Racial Harmony Day, primary and
secondary students participate in fun-filled outdoor
activities. The activities tapped their knowledge of
the different ethnic cultures in Singapore, and helped
them to learn more about the different races.

SPARKS, the concert-cum-charity bazaar that was put together
by MOE’s foreign scholars and local students, showcased an
exciting mix of music, dance and theatre performances, as well
as bazaar stalls and traditional games.

Our schools’ gift to the nation on its 40th birthday - “Today In History:
Singapore” - is a compilation of students’ research and reflections on
past events in Singapore on each day of the year. The book was
launched by President S R Nathan in August 2005.

More than 1,100 delegates, including teachers and school leaders,
attended the International Conference on Educational
Technology, to learn how technology can be effectively used in
education. Themed “Evolving Technologies in Education:
Enhancing Teaching and Learning”, the conference covered
topics such as technology-rich environments and explorations
into issues of technology integration.

The annual President’s Award for Teachers is Singapore’s highest and
most prestigious accolade in the teaching fraternity. It honours
outstanding teachers who have demonstrated passion, courage and
perseverance in inspiring and nurturing the nation’s young.

MOE’s annual Work Plan Seminar provides an opportunity for
policymakers, school leaders and practitioners to discuss strategic
directions for the year ahead.

In conjunction with the official opening of the MOE Dairy Farm Adventure
Centre, MOE organised the inaugural Outdoor Education Conference, “Building
Resilience through Outdoor Education: Vision to Action”. It explored the roles
that outdoor education plays in schools’ programmes and how the delivery
of outdoor education could be enhanced.
