GREATER EMPHASIS ON CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

As part of holistic student development, greater emphasis will be placed on character development and national education. These goals will be achieved through the introduction of the Social Emotional Learning framework, which will be integrated into the revised Civics and Moral Education (CME) syllabus. While the CME syllabus will remain centred on values education, greater attention will be placed on developing life-skills such as the personal management of emotions, development of positive relationships, handling of challenging situations and the making of responsible decisions.

In addition, students will be exposed to other broader aspects of learning for life, beyond their books. In the production of the commemorative book, “Today In History: Singapore”, in 2005, for example, students throughout Singapore, including those from special education schools, compiled research and reflections on past events in Singapore on the day (of any year) that coincided with their own birthdays. The book presented students’ perspectives on well-known and less well-known events in Singapore’s history. This participative form of education allowed students to have fun, yet gave them an opportunity to learn more about Singapore’s history and realise their place in it.
